After spending five wonderful weeksĀ exploring the northeast corner of Florida, including the charming city of St. AugustineĀ š°, we crossed the state line into GeorgiaĀ š.
Our new destination? The quaint coastal town of St. MarysĀ and the stunning Crooked River State ParkĀ nearby šæš . What started as a simple stopover quickly turned into an adventure full of history š, natural beauty š³, and unexpected discoveries š.
š Goodbye Florida? Not So Fast! š“ā”ļøš¾
We thought we were finally saying goodbye to Florida, but Georgia greeted us with open arms š¤Ā and the promise of new experiences.
šļø St. MarysĀ is known as the second-oldest cityĀ in the U.S. (right after St. Augustine!) and carries a rich maritime history ā.
From its roots as a fishing town to its role as home of the Kings Bay Naval Base āš¢, St. Marys offers a unique blend of historical charm and coastal vibes.
šļø Crooked River State Park: A Nature Loverās Paradise š²š¦¢
Our basecamp was the 500-acre Crooked River State Park, nestled on the south bank of the Crooked River š.
āŗ With 63 campsites and 11 cozy cottages, itās a perfect retreatĀ for nature lovers.
š“āāļø We biked along 4 miles of scenic trailsĀ through pine forest and salt marsh š¾, spotting gopher tortoises š¢Ā right by our site!
š§ The parkās peaceful vibes, clean facilities, and privacy made it a real gem š.
š§± A Glimpse into History: McIntosh Sugarworks (Tabby Ruins) šļøš
Just outside the park lies the McIntosh Sugarworks, also known as the Tabby Ruinsāa remnant of Georgiaās sugar plantation days.
šØ Built in the 1820s using tabby concreteĀ (crushed oyster shells 𦪠+ lime + sand), the site is now a free-to-visit county park.
šø It also marks the start of the 11-mile Tabby Trailāgreat for exploring more ruins and nearby history.
š Fun fact: The ruins can be rented as a wedding venueātalk about historic vows!
š The Allure of St. Marys: Small Town Charm with a Coastal Twist š¤š
With just under 20,000 residents, St. MarysĀ delivers big charm in a small package š.
š¶āāļøWe strolled through town, enjoyed beautiful riverfront views, and dined at a local spot so good we went back the next day š½ļøš.
ā The nearby St. Marys River, just a stoneās throw from the Atlantic, offers boating, fishing, and photo ops galore š·š.
š° Fort Clinch State Park: Where History Meets Nature š³šļø
One of our favorites was Fort Clinch State Park, just a short drive from St. Marys.
š£ļø The scenic drive ināwith live oaks draped in Spanish moss š³š«āfelt like entering another world.
š° Inside, Fort ClinchĀ stands strong:
A Civil War-era brick fort š§±
Home to 500 soldiers
78 artillery pieces š£
Strategically important to both sides during the war
šļø We toured the museum, wandered the walls, and wrapped it up with a visit to the nearby beach šļøāwhere we found a shark tooth! š¦š¦·
ā Submarine Museum and Naval History š³ļøš§
Rainy weather? No problem š§ļøāwe checked out the Kings Bay Submarine Museum, dedicated to the nearby naval base.
š This base is the only one on the East CoastĀ that supports Trident II missile submarines, and the museum offers fascinating insight into modern naval defense š.
Even after touring a sub in Texas, this museum offered something new and memorable.
šļø Small Town Adventures: Thrift Shops, Tea & Sunrise Chasing š š«
We love soaking up local flavor when we travel š.
š āThe Hubsā scored big at a local thrift shop, while I discovered a surprisingly excellent chai tea š«Ā in a neighboring town.
š” While the advertised āhistoric charmā didnāt quite match expectations, the tea saved the trip!
āļø We also chased sunrises dailyāthough the perfect sunrise spotĀ eluded us, we learned a lot about Georgiaās unique tides and paddling conditions š£āāļø.
š Paddling Challenges: Tides & Timing šš
Georgiaās coast has the largest tidal swing in the Southeastāmeaning paddling at the wrong time could leave you strandedĀ š¬.
šØ A friendly ranger warned us: "If you miss the tide window, youāre stuck for hours."
š§ļø Combined with rainy weather, we made the tough call to cancel our paddle plans.Ā Better safe than soggy!
š The Reality of Travel: Ticks & Ants šš¦
Real talk: The Hubs is up to 7 tick bites š¬, and weāre battling a stubborn ant infestation šĀ at our site.
š§¼ Weāre managing it, but itās a reminder that even paradise has its pests!
š§ Looking Ahead: Next StopāSavannah! šļøšæ
Despite the bugs and weather, our time in St. Marys & Crooked River State ParkĀ was a fantastic mix of:š³ Natureš Historyš£ Small-town discoveries
Next up: Savannahāwith its historic streets, southern charm, and (hopefully) fewer ants š¤.
š Final Thoughts š
If youāre planning a trip along the Georgia-Florida coast, donāt skip Crooked River State ParkĀ and the charming town of St. Marys.
⨠From Civil War fortsĀ to oyster shell ruins, from marshy bike ridesĀ to historic museums, this area is a treasure chest of experiences šŗļøš.
