A Coastal Gem of History, Art, and Nature
After our exhilarating visit to the Houston Space Center, we traded rockets for ocean waves and made our way to the peaceful shores of Galveston, Texas. This Gulf Coast treasure blends rich history, artistic charm, and stunning natural landscapes. Here's how we explored this unforgettable destination!
🏛️ A Walk Through Time
Galveston's Remarkable History & Resilience
Once dubbed “The Ellis Island of Texas,” Galveston played a major role in immigration and commerce. But its history is forever marked by the devastating 1900 hurricane—the deadliest natural disaster in U.S. history.💨 With wind gusts over 130 mph and a 15-foot storm surge, the hurricane claimed up to 8,000 lives.
🛠️ What followed was nothing short of heroic:
2,000+ buildings raised on stilts
A 17-foot seawall built to protect the coastThese feats stand today as symbols of the city's unwavering resilience.
🖼️ Art, Culture & Creativity Everywhere
Museums, Murals, and Marine-Inspired Art
Galveston's culture shines through its accessible and enriching art scene:
🏛 Rosenberg Library Museum (Free entry!) – History + art on the 4th floor
🏛 Galveston County Museum – Open M/W/F, inside the historic courthouse
🐢 Turtle Island Restoration Network Project – 61 hand-painted turtle sculptures promote marine conservation and make for a fun treasure hunt around the city!
