If you're a fan of dinosaurs, the Dinosaur Diamond Scenic Byway is the perfect road trip to kickstart your adventure in Vernal, Utah. This 510-mile scenic loop takes you through some of the most remarkable fossil sites and dinosaur-related attractions in the U.S. The byway winds through Utah and Colorado, and as you make your way into Vernal, you’re immediately greeted by streets named after dinosaurs. Yes, you read that right—Dinosaur Drive, Stegosaurus Street, and others!

We were pretty excited to start this leg of our trip, knowing we were about to step into a land rich in prehistoric history. The route offers the perfect balance of scenic drives, dinosaur parks, and quirky roadside attractions. Along the way, be sure to check out fossil beds, interpretive signs, and even the massive Dinosaur National Monument—a place where you can walk right up to fossilized remains embedded in rock. 🏞️ Exploring Steinaker State Park 🏕️ | Kayaking, Campsites & Unexpected Surprises

After cruising through the Dinosaur Diamond Scenic Byway, we made our way to Steinaker State Park, our home base for this leg of the journey. Located just outside of Vernal, this state park offers breathtaking views of Steinaker Reservoir, where we had planned to spend a few days kayaking and enjoying the outdoors.

The drive into the campground was stunning, and we were excited to settle into our site. I had opted for a more budget-friendly spot, choosing one without hookups—mostly because we wanted that perfect waterfront view. Unfortunately, there was a slight hiccup: the lake was only 20% full due to ongoing drought conditions in Utah. So, the once-thriving reservoir was now just a fraction of its former self, leaving behind a wide, dry shoreline. 🤦‍♀️

But that didn’t stop us from enjoying the beauty of the area. We took in the peaceful atmosphere, although we were quickly met with another minor inconvenience—ants. A lot of them. 😅

The park has a mix of full hook-up, electric-only, and primitive campsites, so there’s something for everyone. There’s also a boat ramp, swim beach, day-use picnic areas, and even a 3D archery range for those looking to get active.

🦖 Utah Field House of Natural History Museum 🏛️ | A Must-See Dinosaur Museum

A trip to Vernal wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the Utah Field House of Natural History State Park Museum. This museum is a must-see for dinosaur enthusiasts, as it showcases one of the richest fossil collections in the world. The museum is home to over 6,000 specimens and houses an incredible array of fossils from the Dinosaur National Monument.

We couldn’t resist starting our visit by watching the museum’s introductory film, which dives into the fascinating world of dinosaurs, fossil discovery, and the ancient creatures that roamed the earth millions of years ago. The highlight of the museum is the Diplodocus cast in the rotunda. This giant, long-necked dinosaur is a true showstopper, and its towering presence set the stage for an awe-inspiring visit. But of course, there’s a lot more to see!

In addition to the skeletons and fossils, the museum also features a unique dinosaur garden outside. The garden blends seamlessly with the indoor displays, creating a truly immersive experience. We also found some cool exhibits on Fremont Indian artifacts, petroglyphs, and Ute culture—offering a glimpse into the rich history of the indigenous peoples who lived in this region long before the dinosaurs.

For the science buffs, the lab viewing area was a highlight. We didn’t get to see the scientists at work during our visit, but it’s a unique opportunity to see paleontologists in action if you happen to catch them during working hours.

🌌 Fantasy Canyon 🌠 | A Surreal Landscape Straight Out of Sci-Fi

If you’re a fan of weird, otherworldly landscapes, then Fantasy Canyon is a hidden gem you won’t want to miss. Located about 25 miles from Vernal, this remote site is home to alien-like rock formations sculpted by wind and water over millions of years. As we wandered through the canyon, we felt like we’d stepped onto another planet—strange, delicate spires, towers, and arches towered above us, their fragile structures slowly eroding over time.

The formations here are made of sandstone, left behind as the surrounding rock eroded away, a process geologists call weathering differential. But for us regular folks, it just looked like something straight out of a sci-fi movie. It’s no surprise that early explorers called it “The Devil’s Playground.” We were careful as we explored, as the rock formations can collapse during the freeze-thaw cycle.

Though there’s no signage or guides to help navigate the canyon, it’s fun to explore on your own and try to spot formations with quirky names like The Flying Witch, The Teapot, and The Skull. But don’t get too attached to any particular formation—they’re constantly changing with the weather.

🚤 Kayaking at Red Fleet State Park 🚣‍♀️ | Paddling on a Hidden Lake with Dinosaur Tracks

After our time at Steinaker State Park, we decided to head up the road to Red Fleet State Park, a stunning spot known for its kayaking, dinosaur tracks, and beautiful lake views. Red Fleet is often referred to as Little Lake Powell due to its dramatic scenery and the towering red rock outcroppings that surround it.

Though the lake was low—much like Steinaker—we still had an amazing time paddling across its calm waters. The unique thing about Red Fleet is that you can paddle to a dinosaur trackway that’s located on the far side of the lake. Instead of hiking the 3-mile trail, we simply paddled across the water to the tracks and walked up to them. It was a beautiful and serene experience, especially with the striking red rocks surrounding us.

We also got a chance to explore some of the caves along the lake’s shore, which were even more accessible with the low water levels. It was a fun and unexpected adventure!

🏕️ Camping at Red Fleet & Steinaker State Parks: What You Need to Know

Both Red Fleet State Park and Steinaker State Park offer excellent camping options for all types of campers—from those looking for a full-hookup site to those seeking a primitive camping experience. Though both parks are experiencing low water levels, the lakes are still beautiful and offer plenty of recreational opportunities.

• Steinaker State Park has 16 campsites, including some with electric-only and primitive sites. If you’re into kayaking or boating, the boat ramp is a great place to launch, and the swim beach is perfect for hot summer days.

• Red Fleet State Park has been recently renovated, with new picnic areas, improved beach access, and 29 newly updated campsites. Though the water levels are low, the scenery is still stunning, and the park is a great place to explore both on land and water.
